Rekonstruksi mata kulaih atau rekonstruksi mata pelajaran merupakan suatu pendekatan penyusunan bahan ajar (pemilihan materi ajar) yang didasarkan pada kompetensi atau perubahan yang ingin diwujudkan dalam diri peserta didik. Pendekatan ini tidak dimulai dari materi tetapi mencari materi kuliah atau materi belajar berdasarkan kompetensi/tujuan/perubahan yang hendak dicapai peserta didik setelah jangka waktu tertentu, misalnya 1 semester.
Pendekatan rekonstruksi materi pelajaran atau materi kuliah akan sedikit menyulitkan bagi guru, dosen yang terbiasa dengan diktat. Kemana-mana selalu bawa diktat atau materi kuliah, misalnya diktat mantan dosennya pada waktu kuliah S1, S2, dan S3. Diktat atau bahan ajar itu penting, tetapi orientasi dari rekonstruksi materi kuliah atau bahan ajar tidak demikian. Ia mencari, merenung akan perubahan apa yang hendak terjadi dalam diri peserta didik atas mata kuliah atau bahan pelajaran yang diasuhnya.

Misalnya, seorang dosen diminta mengajar Okultisme (Ilmu usir setan) di STT. Kelompok dosen yang memulai atau punya paradigma lama yaitu memulai dengan bahan atau materi maka sang dosen tersebut akan membuat atau menggunakan bahan ajar dosennya dari A sampai Z. Berbeda dengan dosen yang memakai pendekatan rekonstruksi mata kuliah atau mata pelajaran. Bagi dosen yang memakai pendekatan rekonstruksi materi pelajaran, akan memulai materinya berdasarkan tujuan yang hendak dicapai. Ia mulai memikirkan secara mendalam dan komprehensif tentang perubahan apa yang akan terwujud dalam diri peserta didik dan cocok atau sedang dibutuhkan dalam masyarakat gereja. Misalnya dalam konteks Okultisme. Dosen yang berparadigma rekonstruksi materi kuliah akan memikirkan apa yang sedang terjadi sekarang dalam masyarakat umum, khususnya masyarakat gereja tentang Setan. Katakanlah anggota gereja A takut dengan Setan Jembatan merah dan setan-setan lain yang sedang menyerang manusia. Setelah menemukan masalah kemudian dirumuskan tujuan:

"Peserta didik mampu menjelaskan cara kerja dan mengusir setan dalam kuasa nama Yesus". Rumusan ini dijadikan sebagai STANDAR KOMPETENSI. Berdasarkan Standar Kompetensi ini kemudian dipecahkan lagi menjadi beberapa Kompetensi Dasar (pokok-pokok bahasan) dengan indikator-indikatornya (sub pokok bahasan).

Teorinya cukup 7 Kompetensi Dasar dengan dua atau tiga indikator. Ditetapkan 7 Kompetensi dasar karena jumlah pertemuan 16 kali, termasuk UTS dan UAS. Jika 18 kali pertemuan maka Kompetensi Dasar dibuat 8 Kompetensi Dasar. Paling kurang 3 Kompetensi Dasar.
Jadi, pendekatan rekonstruksi materi ajar atau materi kuliah difokuskan kepada tujuan: SUPAYA ANAK BISA APA/ MAMPU APA dari materi yang diperoleh.
Jika ini bisa dilakukan maka dosen atau guru tidak sulit membuat Kontrak Pembelajaran, Silabus yang terdiri dari SK, KD dan Indikator dan lain-lain. Tidak perlu pakai diktat dosen, cari bahan berdasarkan tujuan, mungkin diktat dosen ada informasi tentang bahan yang dibutuhkan. Dosen seperti ini mampu menyusun kontrak pembelajaran, silabus dan RPP mata kuliah baru.
